In 2002 I first heard about the Fair Trade Federation and immediately was drawn to the concept of an alternative system. I was taken by the social impact on its artisans and in getting the word out about this movement of social responsibility. And with that a small import shop was opened selling items purchased through Fair Trade, but also carrying beautiful handmade jewelry and bags made from artisans here in the States. Just as it is important to support Fair Trade it is equally important for us to support our local people and communities as well. If we can purchase locally grown or contribute to our local food banks then we are living the Fair Trade ideal, that is to provide community support where it will have the most impact.
